What does "Theia" mean? « about
Find out what Theia is, how you can get it and how you can help!
Although, Theia is also a Greek goddess, this is not where the name was taken from.
It is believed by many astronomers that our moon was born through a collision between Earth and a planet about the size of Mars. The result was leaving Earth with a near-by partner, Luna (our moon), that gives Earth the tides, the seasons, and actually helped stabilize the creation of sustainable life on Earth.
The planet in this hypothetical scenario has been named Theia (and is also sometimes referred to as "Orpheus").
The idea behind choosing such a name was based on the idea of something creating a new world, as the Planet helped created our world. The Theia software was originally designed around the idea of allowing a webmaster to create a community of users with a common interest. Because of the nature of how Theia has been designed, it is intended to be as flexible and as possible in its use, and hoped to allow the administrator to run their site anyway they want, as if it is their own creative world.
A poll was created on Tainted Thoughts in late November of 2008 allowing the members to choose which name ("Orpheus" or "Theia") they thought sounded better. Since quite a few more members voted for Theia than Orpheus, it was decided to go with Theia!
