Here are what the different membership status IDs represent (as found in the "members" table):
0 = membership pending activation
1 = normal member
2 = trial member
9 = membership pending approval
When a member is "pending activation", it means, they need to click the necessary link that was sent to their email address.
A normal member is broad term implying any sort of activated and in-use account. Users who have upgraded their accounts are still seen as "normal members" in this respect (and their package ID is NOT reflected in the status of their account; this is another field).
Trial members are members who have a limited time to use their account before it is locked or deleted. This is used for a trial member system that Theia supports.
When a member is "pending approval", it means that a staff member needs to approve the member before the account is active (as used in sites where approval is required first).
