Without a doubt, one of the things you are probably going to want to reconfigure pretty early on is the size of files you want to allow to be uploaded on your site.
Whether you are concerned with limiting the size of icons, images or attachments, all three settings are found in a single tool. Load up "tools" and look in "system configuration" for a tool reading "control maximum size for uploads" (admin tool 133).
All sizes listed on this page are in KBs (kilobytes).
For example, writing 100 means 100 kilobytes, whereas 1024 means one megabyte (as there are 1024 kilobytes in a megabytes).
If you are not very good with conversions, google's calculator is really handy. Let's say you wanted to know the exact number of KBs in 1 terabyte. Go to google.com and in the search field write in:
1 terabyte in kilobytes
... hit enter, and viola:
quoting google:
1 terabyte = 1 073 741 824 kilobytes
As long as you use a human readable and distinct syntax that google understands, it is very helpful at making these conversions for you. Just keep in mind that you need to spell out things like "megabytes" and not just write "MBs".
Please note that the user's allocated disc space will still be enforced if you set the maximum file size to an amount of space greater than they have!
