In Theia, not only do you have the ability to control how large the different size avatars will be, but you have fully control over specifying which avatar size will be used in which place.
To do so is simple; load up admin tool 095 (configure avatar size usage). Likewise, you can click the "tools" link/button and scroll to the "image management" area and look for the link reading "configure avatar size usage".
This is a very straight forward form with little room for confusion. On the left are the names/descriptions of the area avatars appear, and to the right of those respective descriptions is a field which allows you to select which size of avatar should be used in this area. Make your selection, and click the "save settings" button - simple as that!
If you're not familiar with how you control how large the different avatar sizes are, check this out.
